Old debate: New perspective? Election and predestination - can you explain it and remain true to the Word?

This subject is similar to exploration of the Trinity doctrine. Words can only take us so far before we topple over into the infinity of just who God is. The Bible allows us to go so far, but no further this side of eternity. There are deliberate tensions that must be held together in scripture (apparently opposite statements). The truth is only known once both positions are accepted to be true, despite their seeming contradictions. This is just the case with predestination. Fortunately, nobody's salvation depends on them coming down on any side of the debate!
